I will also provide free solutions whenever possible. test. <a href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GT Metrix<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.pingdom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pingdom<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google Page Speed<\/a> are great speed test tools you can use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, there are a couple of things that you need to keep in mind when running a speed test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"listsquare wp-block-list\"><li>When you run a speed test, make sure that you choose a location that is close to your hosting. If you use GT Metrix you need to create a free account in order to choose a different location than Vancouver, Canada. If you use Pingdom, you can choose one from the dropdown menu, free of charge.<\/li><li>Make sure you always run a few tests to get an average result and this will also allow you to make sure you\u2019re getting the cache version of the page.<\/li><li>The loading times, page size, and requests are the most important factors to look at, the grades are arbitrary and will fluctuate a lot. This means you can have a low rating but fast loading times and vice versa.<\/li><li>The loading times of Pingdom and GT Metrix will be different because they use different measurements, so keep that in mind.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-f5aa01e9\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-9b9f181d gb-headline-text\">To-Do List<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"listsquare wp-block-list\"><li>Run multiple tests on your website with GT Metrix and Pingdom to have a benchmark to work from.<\/li><li>Run a couple of tests through Google Page speed to determine your average score.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-0d539cb3 gb-headline-text\" id=\"divi-settings\"><strong>Divi Settings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the low-hanging fruits. It\u2019s always a good idea to disable any Divi settings and plugins if you are not using them for your website. This will reduce the number of requests and decrease the scripts that will be loaded. You need to go to Divi &gt; Theme Options &gt; General. As you can see in the image below, I\u2019ve disabled most of the settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which settings are good for you depends on what you need for your site. For example, I have disabled Enqueue Google Maps Script because I am not using Google maps for this site, but if you are using Google maps then you need to enable it. I have disabled Minify And Combine Javascript Files as well as Minify And Combine CSS Files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will be using a plugin that will do this + the rest of the site. Doing this will reduce the size of your page significantly, which will lead to faster loading times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are great plugins or tools that can help you do this, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"listsquare listsquare-single wp-block-list\"><li>ShortPixel<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/imagify.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Imagify<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/tinypng.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TinyPNG<\/a> (free)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s see how you can optimize an image and how much space it can save. The answer is yes and no. More plugins installed means more requests and a bigger page sizes, but there is a way to disable plugins on a page\/post basis with a script manager plugin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you want to install a new plugin, you should always ask yourself the following question: Do I really need this plugin or can I code it myself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you are using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markhendriksen.com\/how-to-add-google-analytics-to-your-divi-website\/\">Google Analytics in Divi<\/a> and you have a plugin that helps you insert the tag. However, you can easily copy that tag from the Google Analytics dashboard and paste it into Divi &gt; Theme Options &gt; Integration. If you do this, you won\u2019t need that plugin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you install a new plugin, check the <a href=\"https:\/\/gtmetrix.com\/blog\/how-to-read-a-waterfall-chart-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GT Metrix waterfall chart<\/a> to see if it doesn\u2019t slow down your website too much. Some plugins are badly coded and can really slow down your site, so you need to keep an eye on that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-b89c5774 gb-headline-text\" id=\"script\"><strong>Use a Script Manager<\/strong> Plugin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, don\u2019t get me wrong. You do need plugins for your website, but you probably don\u2019t need every single plugin to be activated on each page. When you activate a plugin it will be loaded on each page of your website even if you are not using its functionality on that page. Let me explain&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m using the following plugins on my test website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"listsquare listsquare-single wp-block-list\"><li>WooCommerce<\/li><li>Social Warfare (social share plugin)<\/li><li>Divi Supreme<\/li><li>Nextgen Gallery<\/li><li>Contact Form 7<\/li><li>Yoast SEO<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The only plugin that I actually need for the home page is Yoast SEO, but all the other plugins still load (except for Divi Supreme) even if I\u2019m not using them on the home page. So, how can you disable plugins on a page or post basis? Well, you can use a script managers plugin like Perfmatters or <a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wordpress.org\/plugins\/wp-asset-clean-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asset CleanUp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am using Perfmatters and when I open the script manager for the home page I can disable the plugins that don\u2019t need to be loaded. Instead of having 5 plugins loaded on one page, I can just have the one I need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine that you have 30 or more plugins installed. With a script manager, you can disable them per page\/post and this can reduce your page loading speed significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This website has 35 plugins installed, but with <ta href=\"https:\/\/www.markhendriksen.com\/go\/perfmatters\/\" linkid=\"23800\">Perfmatters<\/ta> I can disable them on pages I do not need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"671\" height=\"1024\" id=\"caching\">Caching<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Caching is very important to speed up your website. With caching you will be able to store a copy of your web page in a temporary caching location so it can be accessed by the end-user more quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 2 types of caching:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"listsquare listsquare-single wp-block-list\"><li>Caching at the server level<\/li><li>Caching with a plugin<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Catching at the server level means your hosting provider will handle the caching for you, as long as they provide that service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My test website is hosted by <ta linkid=\"23748\" href=\"https:\/\/www.markhendriksen.com\/go\/siteground-3\/\">SiteGround<\/ta> and they have their own caching plugin for their customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the purpose of this guide, I\u2019m using the plugin <ta linkid=\"23750\" href=\"https:\/\/www.markhendriksen.com\/go\/wp-rocket-3\/\">WP Rocket<\/ta> because it doesn\u2019t only handle caching, it also provides many more optimization options, which I\u2019ll explain later in this guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are already on SiteGround then I do not recommend using WP Rocket but instead, use their SG Optimizer plugin. Check out my comparison between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markhendriksen.com\/wp-rocket-vs-sg-optimizer\/\">WP Rocket and SG Optimizer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just install and activate WP Rocket on your site and it will start caching. You can also try <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/w3-total-cache\/\">W3 Total Cache<\/a>, which is free.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-e589ce59\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-683904bf gb-headline-text\">To-Do List<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"listsquare wp-block-list\"><li>Activate your caching at the server level or install a caching plugin (<ta href=\"https:\/\/www.markhendriksen.com\/go\/wp-rocket-3\/\" linkid=\"23750\">WP Rocket<\/ta> recommended).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-4e6abc1b gb-headline-text\" id=\"file\">File <strong>Optimization<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many different issues that can affect your speed test results and in this section of the guide, we are going to address and solve the most common issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"listsquare listsquare-single wp-block-list\"><li>Minify CSS and JavaScript<\/li><li>Combine External CSS and JavaScript<\/li><li>Eliminate Render-Blocking JavaScript and CSS<\/li><li>Lazy-load Images and Videos<\/li><li>Enable Preloading<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"gb-headline gb-headline-eddc3573 gb-headline-text\" id=\"minify\"><strong>Minify CSS and JavaScript<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Minification will allow us to remove all the white space and comments from the CSS and Javascript files. It\u2019s not recommended that your hosting is running on HTTP\/2 because files can load at the same time. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.keycdn.com\/http2-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a> to check if your website is running on HTTP\/2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In WP Rocket, you can combine the files in the \u201cFile optimization\u201d tab as well.
